How to patch-test a leave-on in 48 hours

A simple two-evening patch test for new moisturisers, SPF, or serums — catch sting and rash before full-face use.

Many “mystery reactions” happen when a new leave-on goes on the whole face on day one. A 48-hour patch test is boring — and cheaper than a week of redness.

At a glance

Time: 48 hours over two evenings · Best time: evening · Age: all ages · You’ll need: only the new product (no new acid the same week).

Steps

  1. Wash as usual and dry. No other new actives that night.
  2. Put a pea-size amount on a 1–2 cm patch (jawline or behind the ear).
  3. Leave it on. Don’t scrub it off.
  4. After 12–24 hours: check for itch, burn, swelling, hives, or a clear red square.
  5. If day one looks fine, repeat once more the next evening on the same spot.
  6. Only if both checks are calm: use a thin layer on the full face (for SPF, use a proper face amount — not a smear).

Side effects / what you might feel

  • Common: mild short warmth with some formulas (e.g. niacinamide) that settles quickly.
  • Stop: increasing burn, swelling, weeping, or itchy hives — wash off and do not full-face use.
  • Patch tests may miss slow clogging or “too heavy in monsoon” — still introduce one new leave-on at a time.

Watch

This is general cosmetic education, not a medical diagnosis or prescription. Persistent rash, swelling, or eye involvement needs a qualified clinician. Broken or freshly shaved skin will look angrier than real life — wait to test.

Tips

  • Under 18: still patch-test. Skip stacking multiple new products the same week.
  • Eyes: face-safe is not always eyelid-safe — keep new products off the lash line until the face patch is fine.
